County Commission

The Obion County Commission meets in regular scheduled monthly sessions on the third Monday in March through November. The January Meeting will be held on the third Tuesday since the third Monday in that month is a holiday. No meetings in December or February. »Responsibilities of TN Legislative Bodies

The Obion County Commission members are elected by county voters every 4 years in the general election. The Obion County Commission is a 21 member board. Three members from each of the 7 Obion County Commissioner districts comprise the board of twenty one.

The chairman and chairman Pro-tempore of the county commission are elected each year by majority vote of the commission. The single greatest responsibility of the commission is control over the County's finances. Every fiscal year, the commission must adopt a budget which appropriates funds to the many departments and agencies of the Obion County Government. This budget allocates expenses to the three major funds of General, Highway, and Schools. Simultaneously, the commission must provide sufficient revenue to meet these appropriations. This County Commission oversees all financial business of the county and serves Obion County citizens through its numerous duties including enacting legislation through resolution or ordinance, approving the county's annual fiscal budget, approving/setting the County property tax, establishing policy, and serving as a voice for the people. This commission also has the responsibility of approving appointments to county committees and boards.
